Derek Lam Spring 2012 Collection: California Dreamin’

The California boy gave us lighthearted ease and balmy glamour with his ready-to-wear collection and the lightness continued to accessories. Derek Lam was thinking retro Palm Springs style – louche yet not improper – and while the bags (thankfully) suggested modern rather than vintage, they have West Coast written all over them.
A roomy sea snake (no python allowed in Cali) top-handle, shimmering with tones of muted teal-green, ivory, and black, sports a tile-like pattern that reminds me of one you’d find framing a decadent backyard swimming pool. Soft hobos – the more slouch the better – looked freshest in creamy white. There’s something so indulgent about a big white bag, suggesting you live a life too carefree to worry about dirt! Even a lacquered black clutch looked feather-light; when black is that shiny it connotes a totally different shade. Ultimately, it was the color-blocked sea snake Anthea bag, such a genius combination of that shiny black, pool-blue framing, and textural skin, that showed the best of everything Lam – and has my name written all over it.
